Goooooooaaaaaaal!: Butchers

Hey, hey, hey. I actually got into a rhythm of doing things around the house, caring for the baby and finding free time to hobby. Currently, I'm trying to get all of the models I intend to bring to CaptainCon 2016 painted and ready to play. I will admit that I was feeling a bit intimidated picking the brush up after such a long hiatus; but I did it and I'm back in the swing.

I decided to get my Guild Ball team first. I got the all assembled and put them on some Corpse Field bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures.

I used sticky tack to temporarily affix my models to paint stirrers from Home Depot to prime without spraying my hands or touching anything. There are a million ways to do the same thing but this worked for me.

I decided to go with a paint scheme that is remiscent of my gators. I love orange and can't stop using it. I'm trying to use contradictory colors to shade; so, on the orange I'm using blue as a shader. We'll see how it turns out. Here is my Boar still a WIP.

More to come!

Burn the Earth for Minimum Wage

Hey, hey. Life still takes me away from my beloved hobbies however I have been finding some cool videos and been able to read articles from time to time. I'm still waiting on No Quarter 61 which I'm hoping will be loaded with Hordes stuff. At any rate, with the Dawn of the Age of Sigmar and the apparent death of Fantasy, Warhammer players have either rejoiced loudly or lost their shit. Happily enough for myself, I was never super invested in WHFB and could care less either way.

I read through the rules for AoS and it seems like it could be cool to play; I think this is mainly because a lot of the ideas were "borrowed" from other games I like. I could see how it could be good for Warhammer, but mostly I personally feel it isn't the answer GW or WHFB players were looking for. This next video includes a good amount of naughty language and is definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

Now, as much as I agree with many of the points made in the initial rant, I feel that burning your army is a completely stupid thing to do. Despite the fact that it was FUCKING AMAZING to watch and something I was always curious to see, selling your models on ebay or even using Barter Town would be the intelligent choice.

Thats all I got.

88 Miles per Hour...

I'm back from a long hiatus, maybe. Since my last post I had been tending to my house making the final preparations before my kid was born. That led up to my son actually being born which has now led to the cycle of sleep(ish/baby care)-work-baby care-sleep(isn/baby care). Until he gets a little older and sleeps more consistently, it looks like hobbling is going to be a challenge. I haven't given up hope however; I have a Vlog entry planned and I will see if I can get it in soon. Until then, check out this sweet vid I just watched.

These Thumbs Were Made for Gaming: Darkest Dungeon

After hearing about the game on some podcasts and having my friend, Larry suggest it to me, I finally downloaded Darkest Dungeon. I really don't feel like the game was hyped enough; to be honest, had I known about it when it was on Kickstarter I would have definitely backed it. I'm actually playing this thing full time now and haven't looked at Diablo 3 since I installed it. The art is dark and gritty but vibrant and crisp at the same time which makes for some amazing graphic displays. I was always a sucker for a simple yet catchy art style such as the one used in Castle Crashers. The sound effects, especially the narrator, are great as well. I can't leave it like that; the narrator is fucking awesome. You will hear him throughout your journeys into the dungeon and I don't think a better voice could have been chosen to match the game. You'll see what I mean. ;)

Darkest Dungeon is simple and complex at the same time; the combat system is fairly simple but the management aspects make the game complex. Prior to beginning a quest (going into the dungeon), you choose a team of up to 4 characters from a roster you build and provision them for their journey. Things that are important to grab are food and torches. Unlike many games that feature torches as items, Darkest Dungeon has made the torch as an item super important and you always want them on hand. When you're in a dungeon and you see that torch supply start to run low you will instantly start to shit yourself about it. It is a welcome mechanic.

Light plays a big part in this game. On the top of the screen is a torch meter that keeps track of how bright your light is burning. As the lights get dimmer, your characters will actually become "afraid" and stress out. Some creatures become stronger in the dark as well. Respect the torch!

Combat is simple but effective. Each member has a choice of 4 different abilities in combat and the whole combat system can be manipulated via mouse-clicks or keystrokes. This choice of abilities can be customized when not in a dungeon so you can tailor a character to how you want them to play. I suggest having at least 1-2 members per team who have access to an ability that damages multiple targets. Keeping combat short and sweet is key because healing outside of combat is close to a non-entity unless you are camping.

While in the dungeon, the characters will be subject to becoming stressed from their environment which can lead to having a slight mental breakdown to a full-blown heart attack (yes, your character actually has a heart attack and dies). Stressed characters will develop a temporary stress related ailment when they reach their break point. You will see them become anything from Abusive to Fearful to just downright Irrational. These ailments can be removed through the various stress relieving activities available at the Estate. If a character dies, they are gone forever. Death can be a terrible blow to your character pool, however recovering a character from near heart attack levels of stress can be not only expensive but time consuming.

The game features elements of team management in the form of your Estate. Much like Rogue Legacy's "Tower of Upgrades," Darkest Dungeon features the Estate which has a few buildings that do things like upgrade armor and weapons, reduce the stress level of your characters or allow you to recruit new characters. When a character goes for some stress relief they will be at the very least out of commission for one mission. That being said, relying on a single "A Team" is not a great idea but not putting money into upgrading characters is also bad because progression will be very hard otherwise. Another interesting aspect of this game.

All and all, I am enjoying the shit out of this title and highly suggest it. I can keep typing or you can just get on Steam and download it. I suggest the latter. It's worth the money, just get it.

Turn the Page: Kaiju Storm by Jake Bible

I finally finished the second installment of Jake Bible's Kaiju Winter series. I wasn't blown away by the book like I was the first, however it did leave me wanting for some more. This particular series is set up to be four books total; that being said, this book is more about separate character journies than actual answers to the series big questions. Wanting more from the book isn't a negative either; all the cards haven't been thrown on the table storywise, so my interest is still piqued.

Mr. Bible has stated that he is putting his own twist on the Kaiju genre with these books. Even though twists are sometimes nice, I long for some more traditional-giant-stompy monsters in the series. So far, there have been big monsters but nothing much akin to the bipedal menaces we attribute to the label of "Kaiju." The large threat in this book has been ooze monsters which I always feel are somewhat of a cop out. It's usually like, "the protagonists are then chased by... hmm, what could they be chased by? Argh! My ideas are so loose and gelatinous...I got it! Ooze monsters!"

All in all, I still got some enjoyment from the book and would like to continue the series to find out what happens. I would still suggest the series to anyone who likes the whole idea of modern day Sci-fi World Disasters. Check it out if thats your thing, otherwise I would say you aren't missing too much.

Warcasters, Warlocks and Feats; Oh My: Stream Pics

Hopefully, you enjoyed some of the various games that I streamed/posted this weekend. I have yet to post the last game Larry and I played yesterday but I believe we worked out most of the kinks with the set up; the camera angle in the next video is much better.

I started out just using my camera(Logitech c615) on a tripod and the normal lights in the room for the first couple of videos. You will see that by the Vlad2 vs Madrak2 game the lighting and camera angle changed. This is what the set up looked like:

I used the lights from my light box setup and my desk light. I did not directly shine them on the table which reduced the shadows to allow seeing each model a little easier. For the next game, I took out a folding table, put the tripod on it to get a higher point of view for better table coverage and put the lights that were on the chairs on it to get closer to my reflective surface(the white ceiling).

I took a couple stills before the game, here they are:

I love the shading on Larry's jacks and MOW. He used Gnarls Green as the shader to contrast against the red which gave him a phenomenal outcome. I'm hoping to see the finished Behemoth soon(hint, hint, Larry).

In essence the new setup created a giant light box! I hope you enjoy the videos.

Please, Don't Feed the Animals: Trollblood Lists 2

I thought I would share some of the lists I plan on playing on the stream this weekend. I will be once again playing some Trolls and maybe even some Cygnar. Here are Troll lists I plan on trying:

Hunters Grim - WB: +4
-    Hunters Grim (Muggs & Krump)
-    Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 10
-    Swamp Troll - PC: 4
-    Storm Troll - PC: 5

Braylen Wanderheart, Trollkin Outlaw - PC: 3
Fell Caller Hero - PC: 3

Trollkin Highwaymen - Leader & 9 Grunts: 8
Northkin Fire Eaters - Leader, Grunt, and Pyg Buddy: 4
Northkin Fire Eaters - Leader, Grunt, and Pyg Buddy: 4
Pyg Burrowers - Leader & 9 Grunts: 6
Farrow Bone Grinders - Leader & 3 Grunts: 2
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 5 Grunts: 4
-    Stone Scribe Elder - Elder: 1

I have yet to play Fire Eaters but I heard they are the cat's ass. Originally, I had Horgle with a slag in this list but took him out for more Fire Eaters and a fell caller hero.

I'm thinking of taking the fell caller hero out so I can get a chronicler in to get those highwaymen up to DEF 16 with Tale of Mists. I'll give it a shot the way I have it here then make the accessment to change It or not.

Here's the next list:

Trollblood - eMadrak

55 / 55 (50+5)    Warlock(s) : 1/1    Warbeast(s) : 2    Battle Engines : 0    Solos : 1    Units : 5

Madrak Ironhide, World Ender - WB: +5
-    Trollkin Runebearer
-    Pyre Troll - PC: 5
-    Troll Impaler - PC: 5

Horthol, Long Rider Hero - PC: 5

Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 5 Grunts: 4
-    Stone Scribe Elder - Elder 1
Long Riders - Leader & 2 Grunts: 7
Trollkin Fennblades - Leader & 9 grunts: 8
-    Fennblade Officer and Drummer - Officer & Drummer 2
Trollkin Warders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 8
Trollkin Warders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 8

This list is designed around units with reach to maximize the feat. I only took an impaler and a pyre troll to make sure Maddy has all his Fury every turn. Snipe with Madrak ain't half bad either.

And lastly, my favorite Warlock:

Jarl Skuld, Devil of the Thornwood - WB: +6
-    Troll Impaler - PC: 5
-    Swamp Troll - PC: 4
-    Earthborn Dire Troll - PC: 10

Stone Scribe Chronicler - PC: 2
Braylen Wanderheart, Trollkin Outlaw - PC: 3
Janissa Stonetide - PC: 3

Trollkin Highwaymen - Leader & 9 Grunts: 8
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 5 Grunts: 4
-    Stone Scribe Elder - Elder 1
Trollkin Warders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 8
Trollkin Warders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 8

I love me some Jarl and instantly felt comfortable with him when I first started Trolls. Being able to speed up the Highwaymen then give them reform so they can change facing or back-peddle seems legit. I had 2 units of fire eaters in this one as well as a max unit of scattergunners with UA but took them out for 2 max units of warders, Janissa and the stone scribe elder. A lot of people see Jarl's pistols and think "ranged caster" only to load him with ranged units. I feel he shines behind a wall of dudes with melee weapons. The highwaymen are the exception to the rule and coupled with the chronicler or Jarl's feat become a DEF 16 pain-in-the-ass.

I feel that the Impaler is a no-brainer choice for Jarl and I put the Swamp Troll in for some enemy placement control. Drag on the Swamp makes for some choice Magic Bullet set ups and enhanced further by a 12" range thanks to the Impaler. The EBDT is in there because I felt like I needed more punch and something to contend with opposing heavies. Janissa's primary job is throwing the curb behind the Earthborn.

I'm excited to get some games in, it has been a while.

So, as a reminder; May 15, 16 and maybe even 17, I will be streaming games on Twitch. If you miss any I will be posting them on the YouTube channel as well as on the blog for you're viewing enjoyment.

See you soon!

The Killer B Hive Vlog 2

Two announcements:
1. Next weekend May 15, 16 and possibly 17 I will be streaming games once again with Brian (aka "Corvus") and our friend Larry (aka "Bytemeh"). I plan on getting started on Friday afternoon; so, check that out.
2. In the Vlog, I say that it won't turn into Drunken Quarriors again... however, this is too lofty a promise to make and I am taking that one back. >;-)

Enjoy!

Bang Your Heads: In This Moment at the Welmont Theatre

I went to go see In This Moment on April 18 at the Welmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. The venue itself isn't terrible but not my favorite place to see a show. Anyways, on to the bands.

Upon A Burning Body opened the show with a four song set. Whoever was mixing their sound was terrible and the lead singer was basically unheard for all four songs. When the guitarist did his backups he was blaring loud; louder than even the instruments. So, they weren't 100% enjoyable to see but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and check out some of their recorded stuff.

The Butcher Babies were up next and they ROCKED! They were super energetic and put on a good stage show. I know, the singers are hot but still musically they were amazing. They played a tight set and I would totally love to see them live again. I don't know the singers names but the one with the red hair was not only doing all her guttural vocals and clean singing perfectly but also running around the stage like a maniac. Such a fun band!

Last up was the main event: In This Moment. I had seen them live about 4 to 5 years ago and they were amazing. It was just prior to the release of their third album "A Star-Crossed Wasteland" and they played songs mostly from their first and second albums. That show was one to remember. That being said, I was hoping this time around the experience would be similar. I didn't dislike the show but I didn't enjoy it as much as the last one I saw.

In This Moment does a big stage show now with costume changes and even back up dancers (as seen in the above picture, brandishing giant syringes). This "bigger" show makes the band seem less connected with the audience and I feel like it takes away from the performance as grandiose and visually stimulating as it is. Hey, it worked for Alice Cooper.

The other thing that bugged me that I should have realized walking in is that they are touring their new album that I am not very familiar with. All in all, I bought the tour shirt so I guess I had a good time but am not willing to gush about it like the last couple shows I saw.

I would go see them again but next time, I would pre-listen to some of the current stuff. I would definitely suggest listening to their recorded stuff if you haven't. Well, that's all on this topic!

Have fun!

Bang Your Heads: Yob and Enslaved at the Gramercy Theater

I should have put this one up a couple weeks ago but I forgot to until I looked at the pictures on my phone this morning. On March 21 at the Gramercy Theater in New York City, I attended a show featuring Yob and Enslaved. The first band up was Witch Mountain, whom I heard were awesome but I unfortunately did not get to see. The next band was Ecstatic Vision, who weren't 100% my cup of tea but enjoyable to listen too. They have a Hendrix-esque psychedelic style blended with the stoner metal sound. I might give some of their recorded material a go before I write them off.

Next up was Yob. They were awesome! They translate from the recording studio to the stage quite well. They are not the greatest of showmen but the music does all the talking over stage antics. I really enjoyed seeing them and would love to see them again. I would suggest listening to them; their style might be for everyone but they are worth giving a shot I would say. I like putting them on while I paint.

Enslaved came up last. They aren't a bad band but I'm not really big on their sound. I was more at this show to see Yob, to be honest. They seemed energetic and willing to put on a good show. I didn't stay through their whole set because I had to get back across the George Washington Bridge to go home; but I'm sure they put on a decent show.

All in all, I enjoyed the show and I would really love to see You live again.

Candid Camera...

I just streamed for 3 hours on Twitch.tv as a test of my equipment; things went well. I had my friend, who will be coming over this weekend, help me get things right. That being said, I plan on streaming some games on Twitch this Saturday, March 28 at around 12PM EST and continuing on throughout the day. I have a couple friends coming to the house to have some laughs and games, so I figured I would exploit the situation to get some more material on the blog.

So, please check it out and feedback is helpful. I'm still new to this so this stuff will most likely be primitive but its a work in progress. Feedback helps.

My profile on Twitch is: TheKillerBHive

See you then!

When I'm Not Blogging...

...I'm building stuff. I've been working on this window seat today and I'm going to see Yob and Enslaved tonight in NYC. Should be good times.

I've also started playing Diablo 3 again which has been a blast. My main is a Demon Hunter and I guess seeing the character Valla in Heroes of the Storm made me nostalgic. They added a bunch of features which are super cool.

I also ordered a webcam that is able to do 1080p and I'm thinking of streaming some games via Twitch.tv next weekend. I still need to sit down and figure out Twitch but I'll give it a go.

I'll also be getting to those WIP troll lights next week possibly tomorrow, so more picks inbound.

Til next time...

Under Construction: MOAR TROLLS!

I was having some airbrush issues last night while priming these guys. While I was at work I had decide I was going to go Old School and bust out the spray cans; but when I got home I found out my primer in cans was all gone. So, I decided to do what needed to be done and I got the airbrush back in order.

I may have gotten carried away with the amount of models I put on my plate. I can paint two of the light trolls at a time, so it's not too bad. I'm still trying to decide how I want to do the lightning runes on the storm trolls.

Till next time...

Please Don't Feed The Animals: Slag Troll

I finished my slag troll after a couple days of hitting and running on it but I am pleased with the end result. Here are some pics:

The base took me longer to paint than the actually model. I used some Vallejo pigments to do some rust on the wrecked warjack and I think it turned out decent. The gloss varnish I apply to the model first seemed to muddy it a bit which made me sad but I still like the outcome.

I looked up some videos on how to properly apply the pigments which helped a lot. Basically, you dust the areas you want to be rusty, sooty or muddy and then apply rubbing alcohol. I didn't think it was this simple but it is. Like I said the varnish I used as  my first layer of sealing took away the texture the pigment created. I may have to use a spray on varnish over a brush on (I prefer brush on because I feel the coverage is more thorough).

I'm still debating whether I want to add grass or not, but I know I still have to apply my Arc lines before fielding him with Calandra. Anyways, enjoy.

Here is a link to the video I found most helpful:

Hail to the King: Goritsi List ideas

At the end of this month my friends are coming to my house to get a weekend of gaming and general fun in. We all received our Wrath of Kings rewards from the Kickstarter and I have pressed them to get some lists together so we can play. I've watched the CMoN gameplay videos and am itching to try it for myself.

As I posted previously, I chose Goritsi for my faction and with a strong love for werewolves have come up with this list. We are all making Skirmish sized lists to start so we can get acquainted with the rules before jumping into a full size game.

My list for Skirmish level is:

Leaders:       1x Korrad Ungarash
                     1x Skorza Alpha
Infantry:       9x Skorza Skirmishers
Specialists:   1x Shieldbreaker
                     1x Scourge Hound
                     1x Blood Engine

For Battle Level, I would do:

Leaders:       1x Korrad Ungarash
                     3x Skorza Alpha
Infantry:       15x Skorza Skirmishers
Specialists:   2x Shieldbreaker
                     2x Scourge Hound
                     1x Blood Engine

Hopefully this does the trick despite the lower model count and lack of troop diversity. I think it will be fun to play. I'm going to attempt to video some of the games to throw up on the blog for your viewing enjoyment.

The Killer B Hive Presents: Notes on Simple Green Stripping

The video I posted yesterday was really more of an equipment test than an informative piece. A good friend of mine, whom I am hoping to have in future videos and commentary, suggested I try doing some videos for the blog. With that, I climbed into the attic and uncovered the old Handycam I had packed away to give it a whirl.

The sound seems like it is sufficient but the acoustics of the bathroom may have helped a bit. I apologize for the gratuitous use of water; when I watched the video after filming, I said "wow, I left the facet on the whole time." My last self criticism is that at many times during the video my hand placement was bad and I didn't have the model in the shot. All things to work on. :)

My hope is to take video of myself painting along with some videos of actual gameplay. Hopefully I can get the kinks worked out so I can present a cleaner end result but that might turn out to be the purchase of a new camera coupled with some sound equipment. Blogging is becoming a hobby unto itself.

Please enjoy the vid and I will be posting more soon.

I almost forgot to mention that I started a YouTube channel under the name Killer B. This video and my future videos will also be posted there.

In a Grim Alternate Universe, There is Only Steam: Cygnar 2

MOAR PICS! Here are more of my Cygnar models. Enjoy:

After using the Gun Mages for the first time and realizing how awesome they are, I promptly painted the entire unit including the Dude.

This Centurion's paint scheme was based on the color scheme of the Centurion portrait in the Forces of Warmachine: Cygnar book. This scheme then carried on to my post-Battle Box models. The next pictures are the first Warmachine models I painted; out of uncertainty of changing up the factory scheme I painted them very similar to the samples on the box. I had bought the hunter with my Battle Box; so, he ended up with the stock scheme as well.

I hope you are enjoying the pictures. It is getting my creative mojo back online and I am ready to start taking on some new projects and wrapping up some old ones (finally finishing the half painted Trollblood Impaler and the rest of my Krielstone Unit). I will have more in a bit.

In a Grim Alternate Universe, There is Only Steam: Cygnar

Ok, as previously mentioned I'm posting more pics of my Cygnar models! Hoorah! Here we go:

I just realized after posting this that I never finished Runewood's base! You can see on the next two pictures of the sword knight leader what it is supposed to look like. I did some building rubble with some smoldering embers.

I actually made Siege's trench base with coffee stirrers. They have all manner of uses but look great as planks or even splintered boards.

I had said that I was going to repaint them but now I'm not sure. I kind of like the blue and white. Originally the scheme was based off of the Forces of Cygnar portrait of the Centurion. I might just roll with it; hell, I haven't painted anything blue in a long time. Next up will be some jacks. Enjoy.
